This is a fantastic beginner pattern. Using only 2 skeins of yarn, and huge needles, it's a fast, satisfying knit! The pattern calls for it to be knit flat and seamed, but most knitters would prefer to knit it in the round, for instance as follows:
On US size 15 24" circular needles (the economical Denise Interchangeable Needle Kit has this size!), CO 28 sts. Knit in stockinette stitch (or garter, or any other stitch pattern--this is the bottom of the bag, so perfect for playing around) for approx. 6 3/4", ending with a RS row (Right Side row--the "outside" of the bag bottom is facing you, and you have finished this row). Pick up and knit 6 stitches along the adjacent side of the bag (the closest 6 3/4" side), then one stitch per cast on stitch, along the cast on edge, then another 6 stitches along the other 6 3/4" side (if you'd like to pick up extra stitches along these shorter sides to avoid holes, and then decrease them on the next round, you may do so). Do not turn the work: Join into the round by knitting the stitch off of the waiting needle. Continue knitting from here, round after round (this will create stockinette stitch), until the work measures about 12 1/2" from the bag bottom. Work the last few rounds (or up to 13 rounds as it appears in the pattern photo) in garter stitch, starting with a purl round. (So: Purl a round, knit a round, purl a round…end there, or continue alternating knit and purl rounds for up to 13 rounds.) Bind off. Knit straps and felt according to pattern directions. Sew on optional buttons (not included in kit).
Amy's thoughts on Valley Yarns Berkshire: Berkshire yarn is one of my favorite yarns. The colors are lovely and combine well. There is enough alpaca to add a lovely softness, but not so much to compromise the natural elasticity of the wool. The heavy worsted weight makes it ideal for outerwear. It's my first choice for hats and mittens, and it's soft enough that even kids will wear it for a scarf. It's also ideal for felting! All this, and it is very affordable.
