This book goes hand in hand with the Knitting Workshop DVD, and puts on paper the some of the patterns Elizabeth Zimmerman covers in that video series. It is a delightful and complete book in its own right, and reiterates the core instruction from the video series, using concise description and many excellent, clear illustrations that were hand-drawn by EZ herself. As always, EZ's humor sparkles, and it is a delightful read, and incredibly informative in the topics covered.
From the first cast-on and knit stitch, to many a variety of interesting sweater patterns, this book, and especially the combined book and DVD, will put you on a whole new level of knitting confidence and inspiration.
Schoolhouse Press was founded in the mid-1950's by British-born masterknitter, Elizabeth Zimmermann, who wanted to supply handknitters with pure wool and circular needles (both a rarity in those days), as well as books, tools, and original designs. Elizabeth’s humor and unique approach to seamless garment construction gradually attracted followers through her semi-annual Newsletter, a steady stream of designs in magazines, two television series’ taped for PBS-TV, the annual summer Knitting Camp and publication of her four books. Elizabeth’s philosophy was received with glad cries by knitters who were eager to think for themselves and, through EPS (Elizabeth’s Percentage System) were able to achieve perfectly-fitted garments while applying their own ideas to their knitting.
In 1965 Meg Swansen joined her mother in business and in 1981, with Meg’s husband Chris, Schoolhouse Press began to publish knitting books and produce instructional knitting videos for both television and home use.
Elizabeth died in 1999. Meg continues to write the semi-annual Wool Gathering, plus a regular column for Vogue Knitting. Meg also heads up the annual four weeks of summer Knitting Camp, started by Elizabeth in 1974, in central WI; 2008 is the 35th year of Camp. Cully Swansen, following in his father Chris's footsteps, has transferred many of the video titles to DVD and has also filmed a number of new knitting DVDs with Meg. The wools, books and tools Schoolhouse Press offers are the cream of the crop, gathered from around the world and we continue to be excited by possibilities for new products and designs.
